Aerospace Sheet Metal Fabrication is the process of shaping, welding and assembling parts used to build planes and space ships. This process is achieved by cutting, bending and shaping metal in the form of sheets into small structures. From beginning to end, every step counts towards creating a piece that is as strong and light as it needs to be. In order to ensure our airplanes and spacecraft are safe, we will dive deeper into each of these steps.
Design partThe first step of making any component or piece on a lathe is to conceive the product we want. This means that we need to generate either a drawing or 3D model which can show what the part will look like if it comes as well as how it is going to work. But a design is more than just what it will look like but also to demonstrate the type of material that part will be made from. Designers will consider requirements such as wrientation and the part weight and make sure that they remain within limits which might be extra critical for aircraft, spacecraft. Once the design is finalized and accepted, it gets delivered to a team of fabricators that will begin machining out some part.
The other thing: which type of metal we are going to use for our part. In the case of aerospace applications we usually choose lightweight metals as aluminum, titanium and magnesium. These metals are durable enough to use in high pressure applications but also light weight which is a must when you talk about flying vehicles such as airplanes and spacecraft. Another point to be taken into consideration is which gauge of metal sheet we want to specify. The thickness will also affect the final weight of part, so it is a significant element in design stage.
Once we have decided on the material, then comes cutting a metal sheet into size and shape right for the part in question. This cutting is carefully carried out with the precision of special tools, such as lasers or water jets. Both of these are made to cut with a great deal of accuracy without damaging the metal. If you dont cut the rabbet properly it will make a problem when we start cutting other parts of welding project.
After we have cut the steel up, onto the forming step. This is where we form the metal sheet into exactly the shape that we need for / our part. We use bending tools such as presses and rollers to forge the metal into a smooth curve at state-of-the-art fabrication plants. During this process it is of the utmost importance to treat this metallurgically sensitive metal with its upmost care, avoiding damaging cracks or frags that would completely render a section less useful. The form of the piece should be tight enough to help ensure better strength and functionality.
The next and final stage of Aerospace Sheet Metal Fabrication is connecting all the parts together. Welding, brazing and gluing are the examples of this. Other parts are joined at the joints that connect these primary structures, and those join applications will experience a lot of stress under operation as an aircraft or spacecraft. Secure joints ensure everything stays together securely mid-flight.
Why Aerospace Sheet Metal Fabrication is So Essential It creates parts which are strong, lightweight and safe for use in airplanes or spacecraft. After all, weight is a major factor in aviation and space travel. Secondly, it also means that each part is made to keep the safest possible position so you are assured of a good connection. Most importantly, it provides us with an alternative to purchasing off-the-shelf parts that do not address our unique aerospace design requirements.
