CNC Design & Tolerance Guide

Clarity at every stage. From your first drawing to your confirmed order.

A practical review checklist for machined parts. These are general design recommendations; achievable features and inspection requirements are confirmed for each project.

Tool access and internal corners

Milling cutters are round, so internal corners generally require a radius. Allow space for the cutter and its holder, especially in deep pockets. Small corner radii and deep narrow features can increase machining time. Identify corners that must remain sharp so a suitable process can be discussed.

Walls, pockets and support

Thin walls can deflect during cutting or finishing. Keep wall thickness reasonably consistent, avoid unsupported features where possible, and discuss long or slender parts early. A more open pocket can improve tool access and chip removal. No single wall thickness suits every material and geometry.

Holes and threads

Use standard hole and thread sizes where your application allows. Specify thread standard, size, pitch, required engagement and whether a hole is blind or through. Leave room beyond the usable thread for tool entry and clearance. Deep holes may require additional process planning.

Tolerances and datums

Apply tight tolerances only where function requires them. Mark mating faces, critical dimensions and datum references on the drawing. State the applicable drawing standard and revision. A 3D model alone may not communicate fits, geometric tolerances or inspection requirements.

Surface finish and coatings

Identify cosmetic surfaces, allowable tool marks, roughness requirements and masking areas. Coatings can affect dimensions and fits; specify whether critical dimensions apply before or after finishing. Discuss colour, texture and appearance references before ordering.

Pre-production checklist

  • Matching revisions for the 3D model and drawing.
  • Material grade, quantity and intended use.
  • Critical dimensions, datum references and inspection needs.
  • Finish, marking, assembly and packaging requirements.
  • Any first-article approval or material certificate requirement.
